Cate Hummel is a textile designer from the Midwest, currently based in Philadelphia, PA. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design and BFA in Photography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2018) and a Master's in Fibers (Textile Design) from the Savannah College of Art and Design (2020).
In her most recent role as an Associate Print Designer at Urban Outfitters, Cate created original repeat patterns, embroideries, and placed graphics for a wide variety of women's apparel products. Over time, she refined her sense of print and color to strongly reflect seasonal palettes, trend direction, and brand sensibilities. She is trained in AI image prompting for sketching and generating artwork motifs. She also produced artwork tech packs for vendor manufacturing, developed print boards, and maintained physical and digital archives.
In addition to her work at Urban Outfitters, Cate has collaborated with various boutique interior brands turning illustrations into repeat patterns, designing embroideries for table linens, and digitizing vintage artwork collections. Before exploring textile design, Cate worked at an independent media company, designing advertisements for both print and digital platforms, including full-page newspaper spreads and community transit campaigns. She also has experience directing, filming, and editing short videos. She contributed to photoshoots in various roles and designed exhibition catalogs and other print publications. Her graduate studies focused on textile design, where she worked with print and pattern design, machine knitting, jacquard weaving, and advanced dye techniques like dye sublimation.
